Overview

Fitchburg State University (Fitchburg State) is as a public university in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It has more than 3,500 undergraduate students and more than 1,650 graduate/continuing education students, with a total of more than 5,200 students. The university supplies undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in 25 disciplines. The main campus, Mackay campus, schools and sports fields occupies 79 acres (320,000 square meters) in Fitchburg; the biological research field covers an area of 120 acres (490,000 square meters), located in the neighboring Lancaster, Leominster and The town of Lunenburg. Fitchburg State University was established in Fitchburg by the Massachusetts General Court in 1894 as a state normal school. Its first president was John G. Thompson (President 1895-1920). It was originally a secondary school for girls until 1930, when William D. Parkinson (1920-1927) became president, and Dr. Charles M. Herlihy ( 1927-1945) During the tenure, the normal school was authorized to grant a bachelor's degree. In 1932, the authorization was extended to all subjects in the field of education. At the same time, it was renamed Fitchburg State Teachers College. Dr. Charles M. Herlihy died during his tenure and was succeeded by Dr. William J. Sanders (1945-1950) and Ellis F. White (1950-1953).
