Delaware State Bookstore opened on January 7th at the new location of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center on campus, which is about to be completed. While the staff is making the final touches on the new student center, as students begin to prepare for the 2010 spring semester, the DSU bookstore begins to sell books and merchandise in the new location. The 7,000 square foot bookstore-located on the first floor on the east side of the student center, is much larger than the previous one. ''The extra space allows them to develop in all departments,'' said bookstore manager JoAnn Holmes. ''They have possible, for example, tooffer additional nursing apparel and supplies.'' Larger buildings are allowed to accommodate more supplies, clothing, gifts, health and beauty, campus supplies, food, and beverages in addition to extra textbook space as well. Ms. Holmes said the new facility will allow stores to have more cash registers to serve customers. She added that compared to the previous two locations without windows, the new location has natural light from the outside, which enhances the internal atmosphere.

DSU has a long history as one of the oldest black colleges and universities (HBCU) in the United States. DSU was founded in 1891 as a state college for students of color. As one of the first land-grant educational institutions in the country, they are proud of their traditions. Today, they are a popular learning center suitable for students from different backgrounds. Their current population includes 63% of African Americans enrolled and an increasing number of white, Hispanic, Asian and other international students.
