Concord University

Overview

Concord University has grown a public university located in Athens, West Virginia. It was established on February 28, 1872, when the West Virginia Legislature passed "a bill to establish a state normal school in the church town of Concord, Mercer County." This normal school was founded by veterans of the Confederation and the Confederacy, and Concord was named after the ideal of "harmonious and sweet fellowship". It is famous for its picturesque campus, which is called the "beautiful campus" and its scenic location on the hills overlooking the mountains in the area. The university also opened a center and courses in Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia. The mission of Concord University is to improve the lives of their students and communities through innovative teaching and learning, intellectual and creative activities, community service and citizen participation.
